Saba Centra Connects Teachers With Students Across South Australia

South Australian Department of Education & Children’s Services Invites Students to Interact With BioSUB Underwater Habitat Project Through Saba’s Real-Time Learning Technology

Redwood Shores, Calif. – March 28, 2007 – Saba (NASDAQ: SABA), the premier Human Capital Management (HCM) software and services provider, has announced that the South Australian Department of Education & Children’s Services (DECS) has deployed Saba Centra to bolster its distance learning efforts. The solution allows DECS to reduce the travel burden for teachers, enhance collaboration and social interaction among K-12 e-school students, and improve the quality of the education curriculum. Students who reside in remote areas of South Australia’s nearly one million square kilometers and cannot get to school because of special needs are available to participate in special events, such as the upcoming BioSUB Underwater Habitat Project.

“Imagine a student working in isolation, who never gets the chance to share his or her work with classmates or see a teacher face-to-face,” said Roger Edmonds, Manager of E-Schooling Services for DECS. “From the moment we deployed Saba Centra, we saw immediate improvements in the way students collaborated with each other.  We also have standardized tests at different grade levels, and the e-school students are doing remarkably well.”

Before implementing Saba Centra, DECS’s only means to communicate with geographically remote students was via the Royal Flying Doctor Service Network’s static-prone, high-frequency radio.  Saba Centra’s high-quality audio and video conferencing, yes/no polling, public or private chat capabilities, group laughter and applause features, and white board functionality allow for wide-open collaboration between teachers and students. Teachers are now able to show students how to do long division, admire a class’ art projects, and receive valuable student feedback—whether the students are isolated due to medical conditions and in the capital city of Adelaide, or living in tiny communities hundreds of miles away in the Australian Outback.

“The deployment of Saba Centra by the South Australian Department of Education & Children’s Services further confirms our commitment to the academic market globally,” said Bobby Yazdani, chairman and CEO, Saba. “Our broad range of tools and services have helped academic institutions deliver innovative distance learning activities such as the BioSUB Underwater Habitat, launched by DECS, that excite and involve students through real-time interaction in a new type of learning medium.”

“Saba Centra has enabled students and teachers to easily see, hear, and collaborate or interact with one another—in many cases for the first time,” says Edmonds. “The intuitive design of the product has made it very, very easy for everyone—students and teachers—to pick up.  Even preschoolers can hold the control key down by themselves to talk.”

Front Row Seats for Field Trips
From April 2nd, 2007, Saba Centra software will be used to follow marine biologist Lloyd Godson to the floor of a large lake as he spends 14 days in the world’s first self-sufficient underwater habitat.  In the BioSUB project (http://www.biosub.com.au), Godson will generate his own oxygen (through plant photosynthesis), grow food, obtain fresh water, produce power, and manage waste.  During each day of the two-week submersion, DECS will deliver two “live” virtual classroom events to children in schools not only in Australia, but also anywhere in the world. To join Godson underwater please visit http://www.decs.sa.gov.au/learningtechnologies.

“Basically, anywhere we can take a laptop with wireless connectivity and a video camera, we can capture special content to deliver to students,” said Edmonds.

The latest release of Saba Centra has an especially powerful set of recording capabilities.  This will make it easier to package special events, such as BioSUB webcasts, for wider audiences or offer students the chance to easily make up missed classes or review lectures for tests.
